Scenarios

Emma has signed herself out of school and is waiting for her mom to pick her up for a doctor’s appointment.  While she’s waiting, she talks to a number of people about Jason and Mr. Nickel.  First, make sure you check out Just the Facts Ma’am to find out what the buzz is all about.  Then, watch the following video clips.  After each video clip, use the Whodunit Investigation Sheet to record:
  • What Emma tells each person about what happened after the soccer game
  • What’s bothering Emma
  • Whether she says Jason did or didn’t spray paint the car
  • Whether Emma cooperates with the person she’s talking to
  • If the person she’s talking to is a Friend or Foe
  • And watch how Emma’s story changes slightly, depending on who she’s talking to.

First, Emma talks to her friend Asma:

Next, Mrs. Coulter, one of Emma’s teachers, runs into Emma on her way to the office:

Vice Principal Gordon comes looking for Emma to follow up on information she was given by Jenna, one of Emma’s classmates:

Ms. Gordon’s called in the cops, so Emma talks to Constable Lefebvre - twice.  The first time, Constable Lefebvre is the “Good Cop”...

... and the second time, Constable Lefebvre is the “Bad Cop”:

Finally, Emma confronts Jenna.  Is Jenna the stoolie or the good citizen?

Ask yourself:

Would Emma had said the same things to Asma, Mrs. Coutler and Jenna if they weren’t alone when they talked?

Which person is Emma the most honest with?  Why?

How would you describe Emma’s relationship with each of the people she talks to?
