Public Perceptions of Privacy and Anonymity

Steven Davis, Professor Emeritus in Philosophy at Carleton University, introduced this panel, which comprised David Lyon, Professor of Sociology at Queen's University and Gary Marx, Professor Emeritus in Sociology at M.I.T. David Lyon's presentation, entitled "Systematic surveillance and perceptions of privacy" discussed aspects and preliminary results of his survey research into attitudes regarding privacy in Canada and other countries around the world. Further details can be found at: http://www.queensu.ca/sociology/Surveillance/research.htm. Gary Marx's engaging presentation explored ideas about different types and sources of personal information, including indications of social perceptions and reflections of personal information and anonymity. Dr. Marx's presentation was drawn from several of his papers, which are posted on his website at: http://web.mit.edu/gtmarx/www/garyhome.html#recent.
